Financial Education in Action
Financial Education Association: A Partnership
In 2012, COPFCU partnered with the Northwest Local School District to form a Financial Education Association (FEA) for the benefit of students and alumni, with the goal of educating students on the importance of money management. Just as math, science and English are an important part of the curriculum, we believe that money management skills and financial education are critical to a healthy future and long-term financial success.
Cardinals Credit Union & Knights Credit Union
As part of this venture, in 2013 we created 2 fully student-run credit unions: Knights Credit Union (KCU) at Northwest High School, and Cardinals Credit Union (CCU) at Colerain High School. KCU is open in the cafeteria during lunch time, and is run by over 30 student tellers. The goal of the student credit unions is to provide real-life financial lessons by enabling students to open and manage their own credit union accounts, and to give students a convenient way to start and grow savings accounts.
Students that are selected to work at the credit unions gain valuable work experience by working as tellers, branch managers, and marketing managers, and learn critical business profession skills such as confidentiality, professionalism, and leadership skills, as well as personal financial responsibility, cash handling, drawer balancing, and problem-solving skills.
COPFCU Co-op Program
Each year, we also select 2 students from each school to work as co-ops at our Colerain COPFCU branch. The co-ops work as fully functioning tellers, enabling them to experience the finance profession first-hand.
