Remote Learning Academy

Virtual Instructional Model

The Northwest Local School District is committed to empowering students to achieve success and exceed ambitious expectations, whether learning face-to-face or remotely. Despite the challenges that COVID-19 presents to our school community, our mission to create a responsive learning environment where all students are valued, challenged and guided along a pathway to success remains. In our Remote Learning Academy we will strive to create a learning experience that is rigorous and engaging for all students. We will facilitate student ownership of learning through personalized and differentiated virtual instruction.

Families in the Northwest Local School District may select either in-person or remote learning for the 2020-21 school year. This page contains information for those families interested in the 100% Virtual Instructional Model which will be provided through our NWLSD Remote Learning Academy. Please refer to the NWLSD FALL REOPEN LETTER for specific information regarding mandatory health and safety protocols in order to make an informed decision about what is best for your family for receiving instruction this coming school year.

Remote Learning Academy Curriculum

The remote learning program this fall will be significantly different from that which was offered in the Spring. Based on feedback collected from our families, students, and teacher, we will be adding more accountability and increased rigor. Students will be required to log learning time  in order to demonstrate that they have met requirements for attendance. Student work will be evaluated based on mastery of the standards rather than solely for participation and effort and letter grades will be assigned accordingly. Families can expect an experience that includes both live (synchronous) and recorded (asynchronous) online learning opportunities with additional off-line expectations around independent reading, work completion, and projects/activities.

NWLSD has selected the Accelerate Education resource for students in grades K-8 electing to participate in the Remote Learning Academy.  Please refer to the individual grade levels below for specific information about the academic content students will be learning during their virtual learning experience.  Licenses will be purchased by the District for K-8 students who elect to participate in the Remote Learning Academy. There may be differences regarding pacing and sequencing of academic content. Because of this, families who elect the Remote Learning option will be required to stay with their decisions through at least the end of the first semester. At that time, decisions can be made to return to school for face-to-face instruction or to continue in the Remote Learning Academy for the second semester, beginning January 19, 2021.

In a Virtual Instructional Model, parents or guardians will be asked to assume the role of a "Learning Coach." This role is particularly critical for elementary families selecting remote learning. Each child will be assigned a Northwest Local School District teacher or team, as well, who will support the child in his or her learning, grade submitted work, and monitor the child's progress. Northwest Local School District has selected the Accelerate Education Platform as a resource to support teachers and students in grades K-8 who are participating in the academy. Please be aware that students participating in the Remote Learning Academy will be following a rigorous, Ohio Learning Standards-aligned curriculum, but one that will be different from that which is presented in our schools in the face-to-face option.  Students electing remote learning in grades 9-12 will be participating in learning with their NWLSD teachers using Google Classroom, Zoom, and other Board and District approved resources.

Here  is a resource for parents/guardians regarding the role of "Learning Coach".
