The State Board of Education has adopted the more rigorous Ohio’s New Learning Standards: Science as part of Ohio's Learning Standards for academic learning. The Ohio Department of Education advised Ohio classrooms to fully adopt the Ohio's Learning Standards for kindergarten to grade 12 by 2014-2015. Ohio is now basing its state assessments on these standards.

Grades K-2

For science in grades K-2, teachers in the Northwest Local School District are using lessons from the award winning Picture Perfect Science series.  Picture Perfect Science lessons incorporates children’s picture books and inquiry based activities to teach science concepts in a hand-on and engaging way. All Picture Perfect lessons incorporate the scientific content and scientific practices along with reading and writing skills. Picture Perfect Science (Grades K-2)

Grades 3-5

For Science in grades 3-5, students are instructed in grade level standards in a heterogeneously grouped classroom.  Teachers use differentiated instruction to meet the academic needs and learning styles of all students. Students in 5th grade will be assessed on the Ohio’s Computer Based Assessment (OCBA) for science.

High School

All students must successfully complete three courses in science in order to meet the state graduation guidelines.  Those science courses must include one unit of physical sciences (Physical Science, Chemistry or Physics), one unit of life sciences (Biology) and one unit of advanced study in one or more of the following sciences: chemistry, physics or other physical science; advanced biology or other life science; astronomy, physical geology or other earth or space science.  Students in Biology will be assessed on the Ohio’s Computer Based Assessment (OCBA) for Biology as part of their graduation requirement.
