NWLSD: Continuing To Fight For Our Staff

June 29, 2020

NWLSD is making every effort to maintain our fiscal responsibility. Please know that we do not take this responsibility lightly. As many of you are aware, reductions were voted on by the Board of Education on June 22, to go into effect for the 2020-2021 school year.

We recognize that the lives of our staff, families and students were impacted by the recent reductions and changes. Our staff is extremely important. We know that every person is essential to the fabric of our rich culture, and we understand how valuable each staff member is to our students and families. In an effort to keep our staff intact, we were able to utilize our current open positions to place 39 of the 45 employees that had their positions eliminated, in various other positions. In fact, 21 were able to stay in their current school or department. While most accepted another position within the district, there were a few staff members that opted out of taking on a new role or were unable to be offered a comparable position.

With these reductions and reassignments, the district was able to reduce our current operating deficit by $2.5 million to align with our revenue from the State and our local community. We are still awaiting information regarding next year’s budget reductions from the State. We move forward into 2020-2021 with our eye on establishing a financial foundation that enables NWLSD to continue offering an exceptional education to our students.

Sincerely,

Todd Bowling

NWLSD Superintendent
