What Parents Need to Know: School Healthcare Services and Opt-Outs

This week, you received an official notice in your email inbox about school healthcare services, as required by state law. We know legal language can sometimes be lengthy and difficult to read, so we created this simplified summary to help your family quickly understand what services are available to students, when parental consent is required, and where you have opt-out options. Our goal is transparency and making sure you feel confident in the services your child may receive at school.

If you have questions, contact Jake Kuhnline, Director of Student Services, at (513) 923-1000 ext. 3907 or jkuhnline@nwlsd.org.

How We Support Students Everyday

  • Basic Clinic Care: First aid, help with minor injuries or illnesses, and emergencies.

  • Academic Services: Advising, scheduling, and support with learning plans.

  • Emotional Support at School: Resiliency, coping strategies, conflict management, grief support.

When We Need Parent Consent

  • Individual Healthcare Needs: Services like medication administration, asthma or diabetic care, seizure/allergy management - only provided with physician orders and parent consent.

  • Private Mental Health Counseling: Provided through outside partners (Best Point Education and Behavioral Health, Kids Thrive) and only with parent consent.

Services You Can Opt-Out Of

  • Hearing and Vision Screenings: Required by the state, but you may opt out each year by notifying the school health office in writing.

  • Social, Emotional & Behavioral Screenings (Terrace Metrics): Given in 5th, 7th, and 10th grade. Parents may opt out each year through a form provided before screening.
