Ohio's Model Curriculum

Ohio’s Model Curriculum helps educators plan local curriculum that align with Ohio’s Learning Standards. These resources are important because Ohio’s State Tests are based on the learning standards. Together with Ohio educators, the Ohio Department of Education expects to update the English Language Arts model curriculum this school year.

Grades K-1

Grades K-1

Students are instructed on grade level standards in heterogeneously grouped classrooms.  Teachers use differentiated instruction to meet the academic needs and learning styles of all students.  

We are currently piloting National Geographic’s Reach for Reading, a comprehensive program that focuses on rigorous close reading and analyzing of authentic text, along with vocabulary development within the readings and expository and opinion writing.

Grades 2-5

Grades 2-5

Students are instructed on grade level standards in heterogeneously grouped classrooms.  Teachers use differentiated instruction to meet the academic needs and learning styles of all students. Students in grades 3-5 will take Ohio’s annual online assessments.

Grades 6-8

Grades 6-8

Most students are instructed on grade level standards.  Advanced sections are available for students working beyond grade level and Applied Reading is available for students who require additional grade level instruction and/or support for previous grade level standards. Students in grades 6-8 will take Ohio’s annual online assessments.

Grades 9-12

Grades 9-12

All students must successfully complete four units of English in order to meet the Ohio graduation guidelines. Students must earn a competency score of 684 or higher on Ohio's ELA 2 End of Course Assessments as part of their graduation requirement.
