In February 2017, the State Board of Education adopted the revisions to the Ohio Learning Standards for Mathematics. The 2017 standards now have been modified into grade-level specific documents with the standards, mathematical practices and tables relevant to the grade level. The standards describe what students should understand and be able to do. Standards do not dictate curriculum or teaching methods.

In the Spring of 2020, the Northwest Local School District adopted Illustrative Mathematics as its resource for middle school mathematics instruction. In partnership with McGraw Hill, students and teachers have access to both digital and print resources for the Illustrative Math program, including full access to ALEKS. Most students are instructed on grade level standards. Advanced sections are available for students who are ready to work beyond grade level, including Algebra 1 courses offered in the eighth grade. Applied Math is available for students that need additional instruction on grade level or previous grade level standards. Students in Applied Math courses have access to IXL Learning. Students in all grade levels are assessed annually on the Ohio State Tests of Mathematics.
